Traditional urgent care is generally built for common, lower-complexity problems. Hospital emergency departments are built for life-threatening illness, major trauma and patients requiring advanced hospital resources. Between them is a large group of patients with urgent, painful or procedural problems who frequently get redirected to the ER because the first clinic lacks the experience, equipment or operational model to help them.
